What is the Boys & Girls Clubs of America ?
The Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA), established in 1860, is a national non-profit youth organization comprised of more than 4,000 Boys & Girls Clubs – facilities that help approximately 3.6 million young people connect with opportunities for personal growth and achievement. It's the fastest-growing youth development organization, and has chartered more than 1,500 new Clubs since 1997.
Forbes, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, and SmartMoney have all ranked BGCA among the top charitable organizations in America based on cost-effective use of donor dollars. For the last two years, Worth magazine ranked BGCA as one of America 's top 100 charities, based on financial efficiency, strength or reputation, and program effectiveness.
What is the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Conejo Valley?
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Conejo Valley was formed to serve the more than 30,000 young people of our communities, providing them with excellent, time-tested programs that offer leadership training, character development, and programs in the arts, sports and fitness. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Conejo Valley currently has three Clubs operating in Thousand Oaks; Marion & John E. Anderson Youth Center on the campus of Los Cerritos Middle School, which opened in January 2004, Colina Middle School, opened its doors in June 2007 and Redwood Middle School opened its doors in August 2007; one Club in Newbury Park on the campus of Sequoia Middle School opened its doors in August 2007; one elementary-based Club on the campus of Chaparral Elementary School in Calabasas opened its doors in August 2009; and our newest Club on the campus of Lindero Canyon Middle School in Agoura Hills will open its doors in August 2012. Fundraising is underway to build more facilities on school campuses throughout the Calabasas, Agoura Hills, Oak Park, Westlake Village and Thousand Oaks areas.
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Conejo Valley is led by a distinguished Board of Governors, which represents a wide range of community leaders committed to enhancing the resources for the youth in our area.
The organization was founded by Cal Johnston, a local resident and community leader, and Chairman of The Johnston Group, in Calabasas. Johnston is a national trustee of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and saw the need for Clubs in the Conejo and Las Virgenes area.
Who are supporters of the Clubs?
Supporters include leading elected officials and community leaders, and a wide range of parents, teachers, school administrators and community members. But we still have a long way to go. The Clubs need broad philanthropic support from individuals, groups and corporations.
What programs are offered by the Clubs for the kids ?
The Clubs provide leadership and character development programs, as well as programs in the arts, sports, health and fitness, technology and pure fun. Specifically, kids receive:
Daily homework help
Instruction in computer use and applications
Career development lessons
Conflict resolution lessons
Fine arts instruction
Drama and music classes
Sports, health and fitness education
Fun field trips
What hours are the Clubs open ?
Clubs are open during the school year from 7:00 am to 9:00 am and from 2:30 pm to 6:30 pm, Monday through Friday. During the Summer Program, Clubs are open from 7:00 am to 6:30 pm. The Clubs are closed on weekends, but open on many school holidays and vacation periods.
What does it cost for a kid to be a member of the Boys & Girls Club ?
The annual membership fee is $25. The monthly program fee during the school year ranges per Club site and if the child will attend before school, after school or both. Scholarships are available to ensure that every kid can join and participate.
Are Boys and Girls Clubs effective ?
An independent study by Louis Harris & Associates of B&GC alumni showed that:
The vast majority of alumni feel their B&GC experience helped them in school, in learning to be leaders, and on the job. Ninety percent believe that being in a Boys & Girls Club was important to their success in later life.
80% said that being in a B&GC had a positive effect on their health and fitness.
90% said that being in a Boys & Girls Club had a positive effect on their lives.
70% said that Boys & Girls Clubs helped them avoid drug and alcohol problems.
