Teaching children the importance of volunteering.

As a parent, it’s natural to want to raise your child into a well-rounded individual. Along with all of the school sports and after-school camps, there are many ways that children can enhance their skills and help others. It’s important to teach your kids early on to give back, no matter how old they are. Now that teens are heading back to high school, now is a great time to see why you should encourage your kid to start volunteering.

Volunteering fosters empathy.

Empathy is the most critical disposition for responding to the needs of others. We need to be able to imagine what others are feeling so that we can respond with sympathy and aid. Volunteering helps to engage our natural empathic sense.

Volunteering helps develop a sense of self-efficacy.

Volunteering can provide experiences that affirm a young person’s sense that they can make a difference through their own effort and skills. These experience can empower young people to apply themselves in other contexts.

Volunteering develops new skills.

In addition to social skills, practical experiences of organizing tasks and using physical and mental capabilities to get jobs done are fundamental to successful work of any kind. Through a range of activities, kids can pick up new skills and talents through volunteering.

Volunteering makes a difference in other people’s lives.

Think about how much more impoverished our communities would be if all volunteer services disappeared. From helping animals at a shelter to cleaning up the beaches to supporting the disabled and elderly, there are many people and creatures that would be worse for wear without volunteers.
